HALP! I FOUND A BAT!

First off, don't lose your shit, that's the number one piece of advice. Here are the most important things to know -

1. There is VERY little chance the bat has rabies. Less than 1/2 of 1% of bats carry rabies and in the event that they are infected they are not aggressive and do not seek out humans.

2. The bat doesn't want to be there any more than you want it to be there.

3. DO NOT CALL ANIMAL CONTROL. In many areas, this is going to be a death sentence for an animal that is just scared, confused and upset. It's not uncommon that animal control policy is to capture the bat and take it in to test for rabies which involves killing the bat. Instead, call a local bat rescue using this link, some of whom make house calls.

4. Go read this, it's a great guide to handling bats that are in trouble.
